The following index lists all heads of households in the eight towns that made up Yates County in 1840. The only town missing from a modern list is Torrey, which was not formed until 1851, from parts of Milo and Benton.
Towns of Barrington, Italy and Potter only. The enumeration done of Yates County by the state of New York in 1845 is the only one now incomplete. The census was taken of all eight towns then extant, but only three of these remain.
